How To Make A Hoop

If you are a beginner hooper, you will want to stay away from the kids hoops at Walmart.  They will cause a lot of frustration and you probably won’t have a desire to continue hooping.  When you make your own hoop, you will find that hooping will be easier than you thought and will bring a lot of joy with your success.  You will be able to make the right size hoop for you.

This tutorial is just a starting point in your hooping endeavor.  There are lots of different kinds of tubing and tapes that go beyond this video, but I want to keep it simple for beginners so it will be easy to obtain the tubing and tape locally.  Also, Walmart sells the athletic tape in white and sometimes black.  Dicks Sporting Goods has all colors as well as black and white.

For beginners, friction is very important with body hooping.  It helps if you wear natural fiber clothes like cotton or linen.  They keep the hoop from sliding down.  Many people wear shorts and tank tops because the skin provides more friction.   I always wear long pants and tops, because the osteoporosis makes me bruise more.  So, be careful if you have osteoporosis.  Make sure that you are protected if you have bruising.  The bruising will go away if you take a few days off or try a different move.  Remember, everyone is different.  What works for one person, may not work for another person.

Hooping is considered aerobic as well as weight bearing for people with osteoporosis.  The hoops have weight and the amount of weight is increased when they are spinning on your body and hands.  Plus, it’s a lot more fun than lifting weights at the gym.
