This tutorial has a lot of detailed instructions. Feel free to fast forward if you already know these details. Some of these instructions will be repeated in the videos that follow this one, because each video builds on the previous one.
Check out Keeley doing the 3 beat weave. After trying for weeks, she learned it in 2 hours from the tutorial above 🙂
Pam, I think I heard you say that it’s the hand that’s on top that does the two beats, correct? This move is a mind-warper for sure! I can totally do the 3-beat with each hand. It’s putting them together where things get sticky! LOL! I just started learning this today, and I’ll keep trying. I have a feeling once this move is conquered, most of the rest of the moves will seem relatively easy!
Shelley,
Yes, it’s the hand that’s on top that does the spin. If the right hand is on top then it does the spin on the left side of the body. I have added a clip to the video to show it better. I will post it tomorrow. This is one of the more difficult moves, so don’t get discouraged. It took me quite a while to learn it, but you are absolutely right … once you’ve conquered it, the other weaves are easier, because they are extensions of the 3 beat.
I got it!!! Well, not completely, but I have it down on each side! Now it’s just a matter of putting them together to do it continuously. Yea!!! It feels so good when the pieces fall into place. I learned the bulk of it from Sandra’s tutorial at Hoop City, but then I kind of got stock. I got what the “weaving” hand was doing, but I couldn’t put it together with the non-weaving hand. Sandra’s step-by-step breakdown wasn’t quite clicking for me. So, I watched a tutorial on the 3BW by Caroleeena and yours Pam (several times). That helped me understand a bit more. Then I returned to Sandra’s step-by-step breakdown, and everything fell into place! I practiced just doing it on my left side until I had it down, then I worked on the right. Now more practice to get them to flow together. Yea!!! I’m so happy! Thank you!
Congratulations Shelley !! I would love to see a video of you doing it.
Here’s a video of Shelley doing the 3 Beat Weave.

Love it Shelley! I can see moments when you get it… a brief, shining moment, but it’s there! I not there yet with this move. You’re inspiring – I give you double thumbs up HoopyChick!
Thanks, Jenny! It’s slowly coming along. I’m a bit faster now, but I still don’t think it’s totally there. I’m going to post another video for Pam (or anyone else with suggestions) to troubleshoot in the next day or two.
yargh; i just wanna cry. i cannot seem to do it on one side without spinning it on the other side too (which is kinda cool in it’s own right but not what i am wanting). i’ve been trying for weeks and i keep thwacking myself in the face! i know i will get it eventually but dang i am frustrated right now.
Hi Melissa,
Thanks for your comment. When I was learning this move, I had the same problem. I would wind up spinning both hoops, because my brain had a terrible time doing something different with each hand. It helped me to think about it as not a spin, but rather a change of position for each hand. When the right hoop goes under the left hoop and you do the hand position change at that point, then focus on the left hand going over the right hand. Think of the 3 beat as alternating the right arm over the left arm, then the left arm over the right, rather than spinning one hoop on one side and then the other hoop on the other side. Let me know if this helps. If you would like to send me a video of you doing the move, I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot.
Pam
Pam, no, thank you for your amazing blog! The moves you demonstrate here have inspired me to take my hooping to a whole new level. You are awesome! I think the problem i am having is that i naturally throw a simple weave with my right hand on bottom (even though i am right-handed), now that i’ve figured that part out, i ought to be able to learn the motion before too much longer (hopefully before i blacken both my eyes). Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking out time to respond and aid me!
Melissa,
I feel your pain … I always felt like I needed a helmet while learning this move 😀
That’s great that you figured out that the right hand goes under the left. Now, just focus on making the right hand cross on top of the left. It might help to just practice a regular twin weave with the right hand crossing over the left everytime. That might get your body memory used to doing something it’s not used to. Then when you try the 3 beat again, you might find the right over left part of the 3 beat easier. Body memory accounts for a lot of the success with hooping.
Let me know if you need more help or want me to watch a video of you. Many times I can help with a simple suggestion after watching you do it 🙂
Pam
pam, could you do a tutorial on the three beat weave going from left side and changing direction to the opposite side?
thank you
chi
Hi Chi,
Check out the first video above (New Improved 3 Beat Weave) at around 9:10. It shows going from the left side to the right side. If you need help troubleshooting, send me a video of you doing it. Most of the time it’s easier to help if I can see what you’re doing.
Let me know how you do.
Pam
thanks you so much for your reply. I watched the segment, but I realized that my wording was incorrect…
I ‘m able to do the three beat weave(forward and reverse) from watching your video, but coming out of the three beat weave and doing the three beat weave to the other side…. but after watching your ” contender 3 “combinations… i think i need to learn the hug weave to connect them…. i’ve been practicing the “hug weave” for 3 hours…. and still…. can ‘t get it yet….. YOU make it look SOOOO easy….. 🙂
I hope you are keeping well and that we are not taking a toll on your health by asking so much…. 🙂
Hi Chi,
I’m doing very well, thanks for asking. Your comments are what keep me going. I love hearing from you and helping you troubleshoot. I love making videos.
On the Combinations Part 3 tutorial, you don’t really need to know the hug weave. The tutorial is just using part of the hug weave to transition from Forward Weave to Reverse Weave. So on the Combinations tutorial, you go from forward weave to hug transition to reverse transition to windmill transition and back to forward weave without really doing any of the weaves completely — except for the forward weave.
The hug weave is a very difficult weave to do. It took me several months to learn. Have patience with yourself and don’t think you have to know the entire weave in order to use parts of it. A large part of creativity is learning how to use parts of tricks to transition into other moves.
Let me know if you have any questions. If you have a video of you doing any of the moves from my videos, I would love to post it on my website.

am I doing it right?
Yes, Yes, Yes. Congratulations !!! Would you mind if I posted your video on my website?
nope not at all go for it. i learned it from your video in like two hours after weeks of trying with others. thanks for the help!!
Hi Keeley,
I’m so glad to hear you learned the 3 beat weave from my tutorial. Check out your video above. Congratulations !!!
Thank you so much. Finally understood and was able to master it in only a few hours. Sharing with my students. Excellent tutorial. Now time to learn the three beat in reverse.
I got it!!!! Breaking the moves down into pieces and slow motion instruction really helped me learn this trick. Thank you.
I have been trying to get the 3-beat weave for 8 months! I try to do it and then give up…I literally started watching this tutorial last night and now I got it! Thank you so much!
Alden,
Congratulations, Alden. I’m so glad this tutorial helped you 🙂
